Program Australian Volunteers for International Development

Position Description
Paramedic for mine-clearing charity
Make a difference in recovering post-conflict areas
Cleared Ground Demining (CGD) targets communities affected by landmines, unexploded ordnance and other remnants of war in countries with forgotten conflicts, including Palau. The organisation’s mission is to relieve the suffering and distress in areas affected by the presence of these landmines and ordnances by clearing the country of dangerous war remnants.
Under UN propagated International Mine Action Standards, explosive remnants of war (ERW) clearance activities should not take place without the presence of a paramedic cover. Therefore, the team is unable to continue its humanitarian clearance activities without this position.
Palau has a shortage of qualified medical personnel and limited local training facilities. A volunteer Paramedico or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the only viable option for CGD to safely continue its work.
The work will primarily take place in the field, accompanying the team to contaminated households, agricultural lands, construction sites, jungle environment, and in boats when clearance is done underwater.
The volunteer will need:
* Demonstrated success working in emergency response
* High level of fitness and agility for a sometimes demanding tropical environmental and terrain
* Ability to remain calm and respond with speed in a medical emergency situation
In addition to professional expertise, volunteers need skills in training and developing others, applied awareness and sensitivity to cross-cultural communication, patience, tolerance and flexibility. They manage with good humour the daily challenges of working with very limited resources.
