Intermediate Life Support Paramedic : Cape Town, Western Cape


Job Purpose 
Paramedics provide immediate response to emergency medical 999 calls. They are the first senior healthcare professional on the scene and are responsible for assessing a patient's condition and providing essential treatment prior to hospital admission.

Qualifications: 
Diploma, foundation degree and BSc level)
Paramedics must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in order to practice
University courses at foundation degree / Diploma and BSc degree level / work-based learning

Hard-skills:
More than 3 years of full-time professional experience in an ambulance service as ILS is an advantage
International work experience is an advantage
Fluent in English (mandatory)

Responsibilities:
Treatment includes:
Resuscitating and stabilising patients
Using high tech equipment e.g. defibrillator
Applying spinal and traction splints
Administering intravenous drips, drugs and oxygen

Paramedics attend emergencies including:
Minor injuries, sudden illness and casualties arising from road and rail accidents, criminal violence, fires and other incidents
Two-person ambulance crew consisting of an Ambulance Technician or Emergency Care Assistant, who helps them. Using an emergency response car, motorbike or bicycle to get to a patient

Emergency Response
Patients assessment and providing emergency treatment and making diagnoses
Wound / injury dressing
Transporting patients to hospital/ diagnostic facility and continuing to provide treatment whilst in transit
Providing hospital staff with patient information including condition and treatment
Communicating caring and effectively with patients and their relatives/friends

Daily / Weekly equipment and vehicle checks
Disinfection of the ambulances and equipment
Charging and testing of equipment regularly and appropriately
Maintaining drug stock and lists to re-order medication and consumables
Daily and weekly checks according to base specific checklists
