Position Summary
This site based position has three primary roles as follows:
Provide round-the-clock medical support and, as necessary, medical treatment to all personnel onboard the rig.
Ensure that the ‘Sick Bay’ is at all times provisioned with the type and quantity of company-approved medications and equipment.
Maintain appropriate health and treatment records in a complete, accurate and confidential manner.
The Medic reports to the Regional HSE Coordinator regarding the functional [medical] duties of the position, and the rig OIM on any matters that pertain to health and safety aboard the rig.

Essential Functions
In accordance with applicable regulatory and local government requirements, contractual obligations and company expectations the Medic shall:
Conduct a monthly inventory and ensure adequate levels of first aid and emergency medicines, consumables and equipment are maintained onboard, readily available for use, and stored in a fashion that protects them against damage, theft, loss or misuse.
Ensure a signed count of all narcotics is made and witnessed by the OIM at handover to relief [back-to-back], who is responsible for confirming the count.
Ensure that the ‘sick bay’ is maintained in a clean and tidy condition, including the floor, working surfaces, treatment area, bed, sink, shower and toilet facilities.
Administer first aid and other medical treatment as appropriate in accordance with training and company approved protocols, and coordinate with shore-based company and medical personnel regarding any further treatment and/or arrangements necessary in the event of an injury or illness on the rig.
Monitor the ongoing status of patients until recovered from injury or illness; or until they are under the care of a qualified medical practitioner or have returned home.
Coordinate and monitor any ‘return to work’ limitations of previously injured or ill personnel to ensure that any pre-existing conditions are not exacerbated by work-related activities, and communicate return to work details to Regional HSE Coordinator.
In accordance with company procedure, complete a patient contact log entry for all personnel treated for injury or illness, no matter how minor the complaint.
Ensure that all emergency medical plans, including emergency contact numbers, medical evacuation arrangements etc, are in place, periodically tested, adequate to handle all contingencies and appropriately communicated.
Respond to all medical emergencies in a timely and professional manner, taking the utmost care of any injured parties in line with agreed medical protocols.
Attend weekly safety meetings and pre-tour meetings, and periodically provide appropriate presentation materials, to include occupational health issues, guidance and support in making them successful.
Accompany OIM or designee, STC and Camp Boss [or equivalent] on a weekly inspection of the quarters and galley areas, and undertake other health related activities such as water sampling per procedure.
Provide the necessary support to the OIM and other personnel in reporting, investigating and closing out incidents, and help in ensuring lessons learned are communicated at a local level.
As a member of the rig crew, participate in all company health, safety and environment processes and programs, including undertaking STOP observations and audits, and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others.

Safety Accountabilities
Advanced professional with operating, engineering or specialist skills and demonstrated competence. Alternatively, a general department supervisor responsible for the direction of all day to day operating activities (including backshifts). Responsible for a major departments’ safety performance.
Ensures that personal behaviors/work practices are a role model for others and in line with Fleet safety standards such as Standard Work Instructions and Safe Operating Procedures.
Safety responsibilities include the co-ordination and planning of major operating and maintenance activities.
Typically, a supervisor with direct responsibility for all safety requirements for the entire 24 hour period (whether or not they are present in the Department i.e. backshifts).
Leads small teams on specific safety improvement initiatives and projects.
Demonstrates understanding of safety audit protocols.
Identifies improvement to safety standards for a work area by introducing upfront prevention strategies and puts measures in place to minimize risks and improve the overall work environment.
Participates in investigations regarding incidents in the immediate work area.
Coaches others on safety issues and can conduct or co-ordinate safety tool box meetings etc.
Participates in reviews of results from operating tests or changes in work procedures to carefully ensure there are no impacts to work area.
Leads and pays close attention to housekeeping; double-checks and takes additional safety precautions to ensure no-one is put at risk by own work or the work of others.
Takes no short cuts and encourages other team members to take due care and not put others at risk.
Participates in safety initiatives/committees where appropriate.
Advises other Departments and evaluates others working around their areas of responsibility to ensure that safety procedures are well understood and followed.
Anticipates risks or failure.
Communicates information and feedback from incident data and rehabilitation processes and takes action to improve safety conditions. Encourages others to do the same.

Participates and guides investigations of injuries/incidents in their own and other departments.

Minimum Education and Skill Requirements
Nationally [US] Registered, state licensed or international equivalent to the US Department of Transportation Paramedic criteria; or other equivalent such as military medical training and experience [Field Medic or Independent Corpsman] or RN with ER experience.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferable.
User level knowledge of PC systems with a reasonable understanding and use of Microsoft programs.
Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Willingness to obtain more education and skills in the Medic profession.
Has a positive attitude and awareness of basic safety plans and conditions on an industrial installation such as a rig.

Physical Requirements
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling are required frequently. Requires lifting and substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.
The worker is subject to environmental conditions. The worker may be subject to extreme heat or cold which may include temperatures above 100° or below 32° for periods of more than one hour.
The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
