STATION COMMANDER: FIRE SAFETY (Ref: FSRM / FD4)
SALARY: R196 164.00 - R254 628.00 p.a. T12

Job Purpose: To conduct regulatory and technical fire safety inspections so as to ensure compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; the safe storage, handling and use of classified dangerous goods and substances and to conduct fire investigations and perform public fire education duties.

Duties: Under immediate supervision and general direction from the Assistant Chief: Fire Safety and Risk Management, interpret, apply and enforce provisions of fire prevention, hazardous materials and fire safety laws, ordinances and related fire protection regulations; interact with relevant external parties including communities and professional bodies and persons and advise on fire prevention and life safety issues; Facilitate the provision of fire prevention and life safety training to operation personnel; Attend incidents of fire outbreak to assist in cause determination and assists in the prosecution of arsonists and persons whose failure to comply results in fire outbreak; Assist the Fire Department in fulfilling the Fire Department Strategic Plan which includes the Integrated Fire Safety and Risk Management Plan. Minimum Requirements: (Graduate) Diploma in Fire Technology from Southern African Emergency Services Institute or Graduate Diploma in Fire Engineering Science form the Institution of Fire Engineers; Current registration as a Basic Ambulance Attendant (Proof required); Valid C1 Drivers Licence; 6 years experience in a recognized Fire Brigade Services environment. Requirements: Advanced Fire Prevention; Fire Investigation Essential Skills Required: Computer Literate and proficient in MS Office Suite; Fluency in 2 of the 3 regional languages, one of which must be English; Knowledge and skills and ability to read and interpret fire protection regulations and bylaws; Ability to read building plans and rational design submissions and apply the principles of fire protection design; Communicating clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, with individuals and in group settings

Note: Shortlisted Candidates will be subject to a panel interview and practical job task assessment

The Fire Safety Inspectorate is a uniformed section and Officers are subject to a 5 day working week. Incumbents however may be required to work overtime with little or no notice and may be assigned to the Fire Service Operations Division when the need arises; and maybe subject to Emergency Standby duties outside normal working hours on a roster basis.
